How to Change a Line Bypass Filter

Changing the oil in your car, truck, minivan or sport utility vehicle is part of routine maintenance. It is recommended that most vehicle owners change their oil once every 2,000 to 3,000 miles. However, some vehicle owners install line by-pass filter systems as opposed to the inline oil filter systems that the vehicle came with. Advantages of by-pass filtration units include cleansing the sump oil of blow-by and oxidation products. By-pass filters also reduce wear metals and silicon build-up, ultimately making engine oil last longer, thus meaning fewer oil changes. You can change a by-pass oil filter at home with basic equipment.

Instructions

    1

Place a drip pan beneath the filter and use a filter wrench to remove the filter element. Allow escaping oil to drain into the drip pan.

    2

Wipe down the filter mounting area with a clean rag and lubricate the new fuel filter's gasket with fresh oil.

    3

Fill the replacement filter with fresh motor oil, screw it into place and then tighten it with the filter wrench.
