Lincoln vehicles made in 2005 come with two airbags: one on the driver's side and one on the passenger's side. Although these airbags are important safety components of your Lincoln vehicle, they do need to be removed if you are going to service or repair various components, such as the heater core, the turn signal switch or the steering column. Thankfully, removing the airbags is fairly simple, but you need to disconnect the battery and wait three minutes before removing them. Failure to do so can result in the airbag deploying which can cause serious injury.

Instructions

Driver's Side Airbag

    1

Open the Lincoln's hood and disconnect its battery by removing the negative cable with a socket wrench. Wait three minutes for the airbag to deflate.

    2

Reach behind the steering wheel and locate the four release holes.

    3

Insert a flat-head screwdriver into each of the four holes to release the locking tabs from the airbag. Once all four tabs have been released, pull the airbag off of the steering wheel.

    4

Disconnect the airbag's electrical wiring connector and remove it from the vehicle.

Passenger's Side Airbag

    5

Open the Lincoln's hood and disconnect its battery by removing the negative cable with a socket wrench. Wait three minutes for the airbag to deflate.

    6

Use a flat-head screwdriver to release the four locking tabs from the dash trim above the glove box.

    7

Open the glove box and press in on the sides of the glove box. Pull the glove box down to remove it from the vehicle.

    8

Uninstall the two screws revealed by removing the glove box with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    9

Disconnect the airbag's electrical wiring connector and remove it from the vehicle.
