The door actuator of your Ford Windstar is the device that lets you electronically lock the doors with the press of a button. If the power locks on your Windstar malfunction, the issue is most likely with the actuator. In this case, the problem could be with either the actuator's fuse or the actuator itself. Replacing the faulty fuse or actuator should only take half an hour.

Instructions

Actuator

    1

Open the Windstar's hood and use a socket wrench to disconnect the battery by removing its negative cable.

    2

Remove the two bolts from the interior door panel of the door on which you will be replacing the actuator. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry out all of the securing clips from the edge of the door panel, then remove the door panel. Disconnect the panel's wiring connector before removing it from the door.

    3

Use a flat-head screwdriver to disconnect the locking rod from the actuator. Use a socket wrench to remove the actuator's bolts and pull the actuator off of the door. Disconnect its wiring connector.

    4

Attach a replacement actuator to the door and reattach its bolts and locking rod. Reattach the wiring connector.

    5

Reattach the door panel and reconnect the battery.

Fuse

    6

Open the Windstar's hood and open the fuse block in the upper-right corner of the engine compartment.

    7

Use a fuse puller to remove the fuse labeled "Run" in slot 21.

    8

Install a replacement 10A fuse into slot 21, then reattach the fuse block cover. Close the hood.
