A vehicle thermostat controls when coolant is released from the radiator to the engine. On most vehicles, it is located between where the upper radiator hose meets the engine manifold. Install a thermostat on a Ford Ranger pickup by removing the hose from the thermostat housing, taking off a couple of bolts and placing the new thermostat and gasket into the manifold. RTV silicone sealant should be used on both sides of the gasket to ensure a good bond.

Instructions

    1

Locate where the upper radiator hose meets the thermostat housing between the hose and the engine. Loosen the hose clamp with the screwdriver and slide down the hose, away from the thermostat. Slide the hose away from the housing with the end pointed up so the fluid drains back into the radiator.

    2

Remove the two bolts holding the thermostat housing to the intake manifold and lift the housing off. Remove the old thermostat from just inside the manifold. Wipe the manifold area clean and scrape away the old gasket if necessary.

    3

Replace the thermostat with the new one. Put a bead of silicone on both sides of the new gasket and place on top of the manifold.

    4

Place the housing back into place and secure with the two bolts. Do not over tighten.

    5

Attach the radiator hose by sliding back onto the thermostat housing. Place the clamp over the union and tighten the connection.
