How to Test a HID Lens

HID (High-intensity Discharge) lamps became the standard headlight lamp for automobiles in the 1990s. These lamps have many advantages over older halogen lamps, such as improved visibility during nighttime use. These lamps are made up of a bulb that sits in an outer plastic housing called a "lens." It's a good idea to periodically test these lenses to see if the light lamp is as strong as it once was. If this is the case it is likely the result of a dirty lens.

Instructions

    1

Turn off your car and open the hood. Locate the back of the headlight and unscrew any screws securing the light to the vehicle.

    2

Unplug the wiring harness from the wiring plugs at the rear of the headlight.

    3

Slide the headlight assembly out of the front of the vehicle.

    4

Remove any screws on the side of the lens of the headlight.

    5

Remove the lens and clean both sides of it using a rag and a cleaning solvent designed for headlights. These are available at auto parts retailers.

    6

Replace the lens and screws and place the headlight assembly back in its compartment.

    7

Secure the screws at the rear of the headlight and plug the wiring harness back into the headlight.

    8

Turn on the vehicle and turn on your headlights in order to test the lens.
