Cars with automatic transmissions may be somewhat easier to drive, but manual transmissions offer better fuel economy and a unique driving style some motorists may prefer. Though the 1979 Buick Skylark was factory-produced with an automatic transmission, you can convert it to manual. The conversion process requires some degree of mechanical know-how, but doing it yourself -- in lieu of paying a professional mechanic -- can save a great deal of money.
Instructions
- 1
Unscrew the bolts securing the gear-shifter knob and gear-shift lever, and remove them by hand.
2Detach the old brake pedal by removing the pin connected to the actuator rod -- the long, thin rod in the center -- unplugging the wiring with your hand, and loosening the bolts until you can remove it by hand. Replace the old brake pedal with the new brake pedal/clutch unit by doing the same in the reverse order, tightening the bolts with the wrench. Replace the wiring for the brake pedal by reattaching the wires by hand.
3Loosen the bolts attached to the torque converter with a wrench. Remove the converter with your hands.
4Slide the new clutch kit into the bell housing behind where the torque converter used to be using your hands. Use the wrench to tighten the nuts holding it in place until it's firmly mounted.
5Run the manual linkage cable through the driveshaft by hand and attach it to the clutch mechanism. Wrap the cable around the clutch mechanism and fasten it by hand in the groove at the top of the mechanism.
6Install the shift lever by sliding it into place alongside the clutch and connect it by hand to the other end of the manual linkage.
