How to Troubleshoot a P0301

The P0301 error code is used by the Ford Rangers to indicate that it has detected a misfire condition on the cylinder closest to the front of the engine. The exact nature of this code means that you can focus in on the problem and immediately fix the issue, which originates around key components such as the spark plug in your engine.

Unplug the spark plug wire from cylinder number one in your engine before removing the spark plug using a ratchet extension and spark plug socket. Check the plug for oil, as this may indicate leaks into the cylinder or poor fuel quality.

Inspect the spark plug visually. You are looking for damaged insulation like burns and cuts and you should also inspect the state of the wiring to find fraying or other damage. Replace the spark plug if necessary.

Ensure there are no cracks or other structural damage on the distributor cap leading to the spark plug wire you disconnected. Replace the cap if it appears to be necessary due to damage.

Check the fuel injector which feeds the intake valve on cylinder number one; a vital part of the ignition process. Switch on and allow the engine to idle and, using a mechanics stethoscope, inspect whether the fuel injector valve is opening and closing. Anything other than this suggests a fault which must be fixed by a mechanic.
