Most of the interior components of modern cars are made of rigid plastic. This material is tough and durable, but can be tricky to repair if it does develop a hole. Fortunately, modern plastic repair compounds can bond strongly to a wide variety of rigid plastics. With care and properly matched paint, it is possible to make durable and inconspicuous repairs to most plastic components in a car.

Instructions

    1

Clean the area around the hole using a degreaser and a lint-free cloth. Cut away any ragged edges using a utility knife.

    2

Sand the edges of the hole and the area immediately surrounding the hole with 80-grit sandpaper.

    3

Dish out the hole using an angle grinder at low speed.

    4

Apply a self-adhesive drywall patch to the back side of any large holes (larger than quarter-sized).

    5

Apply a plastic repair compound to the hole and the area two to three inches surrounding it. Build up the material slightly above the level of the surrounding plastic to allow for sanding. Let the compound dry fully before continuing.

    6

Sand the repair compound with 80-grit sandpaper until it is level with the surrounding plastic. Wipe the repair compound with a damp cloth to remove any sanding dust.

    7

Prime the repair compound using basic grey automotive primer. Paint over the repair using automotive paint matched to the component's color.
