Automotive enthusiasts often consider Nissan the founder of compact pickups, as it was the first company to offer a compact pickup in the U.S. The original compact pickup, the Datsun now Nissan 1000, produced only 37 horsepower, but it was a step in the right direction. In 1999, Nissan released an all-new compact pickup, the Frontier. The 2001 Frontier did not come standard with a stereo system, but it did have an optional AM-FM, CD-player audio system. Installing a stereo in the 2001 Frontier is a straightforward task that requires basic mechanical knowledge.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Wrap the metal end of a flat-head screwdriver with a layer of dust tape. This acts as an insulator to prevent damage to the Frontiers trim from prying with the screwdriver.

    2

Open the trucks ashtray. Press the metal tab inside the ashtray to unlock it and pull the ashtray from the dashboard.

    3

Remove the two screws from behind where the ashtray was using a Phillips screwdriver.

    4

Pry around the outside of the radio bezel the trim surrounding the radio with a flat-head screwdriver. Pull the bezel from the dashboard, and unplug the wiring harness on the rear of the cigarette lighter.

    5

Remove the four radio-retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Slide the radio from the dashboard until you can reach the wiring on the rear of the radio. Press and hold the unlocking buttons on the two wiring harnesses on the rear of the radio, and pull the wiring harnesses from the radio. Pull the antenna wire from the rear of the radio. Remove the radio.

Installation

    6

Plug the wiring harnesses into the rear of the radio until the snap into place. Press the antenna cable into its receptacle on the rear of the radio.

    7

Slide the radio into the dashboard, lining up the locator pins on the dashboard up with the locator holes on the radios bracket. Tighten the four radio-retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

    8

Reconnect the wiring harness to the rear of the cigarette lighter. Line up the clips on the rear of the radio bezel with the slots in the dashboard. Press the radio bezel onto the dashboard until the clips snap into place.

    9

Tighten the two screws in the ashtray cavity with a Phillips screwdriver and reinstall the ashtray onto its track. Close the ashtray.
