How to Fix a Nick in a Car Windshield

Repairing a nick in a windshield is not as easy as it may seem. You must first take a close look to see if the chip is on the surface or if it goes to the middle layer of the windshield where there is a tough sheet of plastic to keep the glass from shattering. You should then determine if the nick a bullseye break with a very small surface hole, or if there is any spider webbing or lines radiating from the break. These can cause severe problems and are not easily repaired.

Instructions

    1

Clean and flake the small glass chips from around the hole with the needle supplied in the windshield repair kit. Pick the edges to smooth them. Attempt to slightly enlarge the hole by dislodging sharp fragments. The object is to allow good flow of the filler resin to fill the cavity.

    2

Spray glass cleaner directly into the hole. Overflow the cavity with the cleaner to wash out the tiny glass fragments. Clean the surrounding area and allow the repair site to dry. Move the vehicle to a shady area.

    3

Attach the repair kit's injector base to the windshield. Fill the base with resin. Install the syringe into the base, pull it up and lock it in place. This creates a vacuum condition, and bubbles will begin to form as air escapes the hole in the windshield. Leave it in place for 10 to 20 minutes. Push the syringe down, and lock it in place. This forces the resin into the break. Let it sit for another 20 minutes.

    4

Remove the syringe and base. Clean up any excess resin. If a tiny hole is left over, fill it with a drop of leftover resin, and cover the repair with the curing film. Move the vehicle to sunlight and let it sit for 30 minutes. Scrape off any excess resin with a razor blade.
