If you have noticed a small, star-like crack on your windshield, you might be worried that the entire windshield needs to be replaced. In many cases, however, this type of crack can be repaired with a windshield repair kit. By using one of these kits and taking some other basic measures, you can repair the windshield star yourself, saving time and money.
Instructions
- 1
Clean the windshield thoroughly. Use a razor blade to remove any glass chips, and scrape away any residue from the surface. Mix three parts vinegar to one part water in a container and use this solution to clean the windshield with a sponge or rag. Dry the surface before continuing.
2Measure the size of the windshield star, including the length and number of "rays" extending out from the center of the star.
3Purchase a windshield repair kit if the crack contains no more than two rays that are a half-inch or shorter in length. If the crack is larger, consult a professional to determine if the crack can be repaired.
4Apply the repair adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions in the kit. The directions vary by kit, but will most will likely involve injecting the adhesive with a syringe and sucking the air out of the crack.
5Let the adhesive fully cure and dry, then use the razor blade to shave off any ragged edges or bubbles.
