The window regulator works with the window controls and the run channel to direct the window glass up and down within your Dodge Durango doors. Any difficulties with the regulator can be dangerous, as they can lead to the glass cracking. There are occasionally simple methods to repair the regulator, but it often requires replacing the regulator itself. This replacement process can vary depending on the Durango's exact year.

Instructions

Accessing the Regulator

    1

Disconnect the Durango's negative battery cable using a wrench on the cable clamp nut.

    2

Remove the door's window control: Pry out the electric switches with a trim stick and disconnect the electrical connector, or disconnect the manual crank with a hooked tool or rag on the clip.

    3

Unscrew the door trim panel's screws with your screwdriver -- look around the top mirror corner, the bottom edge and the two handles -- and then lift the panel off its clips to remove it. Peel off the plastic shield.

    4

Pull out the weatherstripping from the window slot in the top of the door. The stripping may be in two pieces for the front and the rear end.

    5

Unbolt and remove the front glass run channel with your wrench and see if it is damaged. Replace it if needed.

    6

Remove the nuts connecting the glass to the regulator with your wrench and then slide the glass up and out of the door.

Repair

    7

Inspect the regulator and see if it has fallen out of alignment, possibly from a loose or lost bolt. Replace and/or tighten the bolt with your wrench.

    8

Remove all of the bolts if you need to replace the regulator. Unplug the electrical connector if the truck uses power windows and remove the regulator from the door.

    9

Insert the replacement regulator within the door and connect it with the bolts. Plug in the electrical connector if needed.

    10

Slide the window glass in to the door through the upper slot and connect it to the regulator with its nuts.

    11

Install the front glass run channel with its bolts.

    12

Reconnect the weatherstripping and the plastic shield -- the shield should be self-adhesive -- and reconnect the door trim panel with its clips and screws followed by the window controls.

    13

    Reconnect the battery cable.
