Installing Brake Pads on a 1994 Nissan Pathfinder

The braking system on your 1994 Nissan Pathfinder is one of the most important safety features on the vehicle. Reliable, consistent braking depends on a well serviced, regularly inspected brake system. Worn brake pads can result in uneven braking, difficulty stopping, noise when braking, and excessive wear on other braking and steering components. Brakes are inexpensive and relatively easy to replace. With a few hand tools, this job can be performed in a driveway or garage.

Instructions

    1

Park your 1994 Nissan Pathfinder on a flat, level surface with the parking brake fully engaged and the wheels securely chocked. Raise the vehicle with a jack and support it on jack stands.

    2

Use a lug wrench to remove the lug nuts then remove the wheel/tire assembly from the vehicle.

    3

Compress the brake caliper with an 8-inch C-clamp. Place the fixed jaw of the C-clamp over the back of the brake caliper and tighten the screw pad onto the outer brake pad until the caliper is fully compressed. Be careful not to pinch or kink the brake line on the rear of the caliper. Remove the C-clamp.

    4

Remove the lower slide bolt from the caliper with a socket wrench. Pivot the caliper up and remove the brake pad retainers, shims and pads. Make note of the location and orientation of the retainers and shims so you can reinstall them in the same position.

    5

Grease the corners of the brake pad retainers and reinstall them in their original positions. Install the new brake pads and shims then swing the caliper back into position. Reinstall the lower caliper slide bolt and tighten it securely. Reinstall the wheel/tire assembly and tighten the lug nuts securely. Depress the brake pedal to fully seat the new brake pads. Repeat Steps 2 through 5 on all wheels that need the brake pads replaced.
