It is not difficult to replace a brake line on a Datsun 280Z. The task requires little time and you may save the cost of labor if you do the job yourself. The most difficult part of the procedure is crawling under the 280Z. To obtain the right replacement line, you may match the existing line to prepared brake lines readily available at an auto parts store, or you may customize a section of line, bending and flaring it as necessary to fit your purpose.
Instructions
- 1
Open the 280Z engine compartment and prop the hood. Remove the cover from the master brake cylinder. Drain the brake fluid from the master cylinder using the turkey baster. Place the brake fluid in the drain pan for recycling.
2Raise the 280Z using the automobile jack on the side of the car where you will be working. Place a jack stand under the car near the jacking point. Raise the jack stand to the frame. Remove the wheel using a lug wrench to remove the lug nuts.
3Locate the fittings on which you need to install the brake line. If there is an existing line, clean the fittings thoroughly with the wire brush and then loosen them with a wrench. Remove the existing brake line and put the new one in its place.
4Tighten the fittings on each end of the new brake line with a wrench. Replace the wheel on the 280Z and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Remove the jack stand from under the car. Lower the 280Z to the ground.
5Refill the master cylinder with fresh brake fluid. Bleed the brake lines by having a helper pump and hold the brake pedal as you open the bleeder valve at the wheel with a wrench to expel the air from the lines. Continue this procedure until all the air is gone.
