How to Remove Glare on a Windshield

Windshield glare, besides being an annoyance, is a hazard to safe driving. Most people suffer through windshield glare, not realizing that thoroughly cleaning and polishing the windshield will reduce or remove glare altogether. However, using the wrong chemicals on a windshield when you clean it contributes to windshield glare. Windshield scratches, abrasions or cracks also can hamper vision and cause glare. Spending a few minutes to clean and polish the windshield thoroughly inside and out can help remove glare.

Instructions

    1

Clean the windshield inside and out with cleaners formulated for glass. Using other cleaners can add a murky film or greasy smudges on the windshield that cause windshield glare. Smoking inside a car adds chemicals that create a film on the windshield. Though invisible during daylight, this film leads to nighttime glare. Scrub vigorously and rinse clean.

    2

Use a plastic scrubber to remove bug residue and road grime that add a film to the windshield. Thoroughly rinse with clean water.

    3

Apply a mixture of vinegar and water dried with newspaper to remove windshield glare after washing the windshield. Mix vinegar and water in a bucket and use a sponge or cloth to apply the liquid to the windshield. Wipe the area dry with crumpled newspaper. Ensure the newspaper has no color ink on it. When the newspaper becomes too wet, use another dry, crumpled piece. This process removes streaks and glare.

    4

Apply a polish formulated for use with windows when the window is dry. Glass polishes and similar products also help remove tiny scratches. Wet a clean cotton rag and add a half-dollar size amount of glass polish to the rag. Apply to the glass using a circular motion, covering the entire area, then allow it to dry to a milky white residue. After drying, wipe off the polish with a clean microfiber cloth.
