How to Replace the Disk Pads on a 1999 Land Rover

The disc pads form a part of your Land Rover's brake system. They grip the wheels' rotors, forcing them to stop when you step on the brakes. The friction rubs away at the pads, eventually wearing them down. Replace your pads when either a routine inspection reveals that they're worn or when you hear a slight scraping noise when you apply the brakes.

Instructions

    1

    Lift the car's hood.

    2

Insert one end of the siphon into the master cylinder, the component on the driver's side from which four lines run.

    3

Draw out all the brake fluid.

    4

Raise one of the Land Rover's corners with the jack.

    5

Remove the lug nuts of the corner's tire with the lug wrench.

    6

Remove the tire and the wheel.

    7

Lift the caliper away from the wheel's rotor. The rotor is the metal disc behind the wheel. The caliper is the assembly that clamps on it.

    8

Push in the caliper's pistons with the brake caliper tool.

    9

Remove the worn pads from the caliper.

    10

Insert fresh pads in the old ones' place.

    11

Remove the brake caliper tool, releasing its pistons.

    12

Clamp the caliper back on to the rotor.

    13

Replace the wheel and the tire.

    14

Repeat steps four through 13 with the remaining three tires.

    15

    Replace the brake fluid.
