The 1996 General Motors Geo Metro and its counterpart, the Suzuki Swift, do not use a mass airflow, or MAF, sensor. In its place is a manifold absolute pressure, or MAP, sensor. Both signal the same pertinent information to the computer: the MAF by the air volume passing the hot-wire in the sensor, and the MAP by the atmospheric pressure in the intake manifold. As the throttle is opened, the pressure drops in the manifold, indicating additional load. The MAP is approximately 1 by 2 inches and has a three-wire plug on the side and a vacuum hose on the bottom from the intake manifold. It is on the passenger-side firewall on most vehicles and on a bracket on the valve cover on some. It is easy to locate and identify.
Instructions
- 1
Lift the hood and locate the sensor. Unplug the electrical plug on the sensor. Pull the vacuum hose off the bottom of the sensor.
2Remove the two screws (one on each side) that secure the sensor to the mounting bracket using the appropriate-size nut driver.
3Install the new sensor by aligning the two holes and inserting the screws. Tighten the screws snugly.
4Install the lower vacuum hose. Plug the electrical connector into the sensor.
