Leading into 2007, Ford had a stable full of SUVs that could fit nearly any customers needs, including the heavy-duty Excursion, the full-size Expedition, the mid-size Explorer and the compact Escape. The only area Ford fell behind in was the crossover segment. Ford filled that open slot with the Edge, a mid-size crossover SUV that was stylish and still retained the utility quality in sport utility vehicle with its 3,500 pounds towing capacity. Replacing the rear wiper motor on the 2007 Edge is much simpler than it looks, as it only requires removing one panel to access it.

Instructions

    1

Lift up on the rear wiper blade and stick a 3-inch long piece of masking tape to the rear window directly under the wiper blade. Lower the wiper blade onto the rear window, so the rubber blade rests on the masking tape. Trace the outline of the rubber blade with a pen, so it leaves an alignment line on the masking tape to aid in reinstallation.

    2

Pry upward on the wiper arm nut cover located on the innermost end of the wiper arm with a flat-head screwdriver to disengage its retaining clips. Pivot the nut cover upward, exposing the wiper arm retaining nut.

    3

Remove the wiper arm retaining nut with a ratchet and socket and pull the arm from the wiper motor output shaft with a slight wiggling motion.

    4

Open the rear hatch. Remove the nut securing the power lift gate arm, if equipped, to the rear hatch, using a ratchet and socket. Pull the arm from the rear hatch.

    5

Remove the four screws on the bottom of the lower rear hatch trim panel with a ratchet and socket. Pull around the perimeter of the lower rear hatch trim panel to disengage its retaining clips. Remove the lower rear hatch trim panel from the rear hatch, exposing the rear wiper motor behind it.

    6

Pry upward on the locking tab on the wiring harness plugged into the wiper motor, using a flat-head screwdriver and pull the harness from the wiper motor.

    7

Remove the three wiper motor bolts with a ratchet and socket and pull the wiper motor from the Edge.

    8

Set the new wiper motor on the rear hatch, guiding the wiper motor output shaft through its hole in the rear hatch. Hand-thread the three motor-retaining bolts, then tighten them to 8 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.

    9

Position the lower rear hatch trim panel back onto the rear hatch, lining up its retaining clips with the holes in the rear hatch. Press the trim onto the hatch firmly to lock it into place. Tighten the four retaining screws with a ratchet and socket.

    10

Press the power lift gate arm onto its mounting stud on the rear hatch and hand-thread its retaining nut. Tighten the retaining nut to 8 foot-pounds. Plug the wiring harness into the receptacle on the rear wiper motor. Close the rear hatch.

    11

Set the rear wiper arm loosely onto the wiper motor output shaft, aligning the rubber part of the wiper blade with the line on the masking tape. Press the wiper arm onto the wiper motor output shaft and hand-thread its retaining nut. Tighten the wiper arm retaining nut to 9 foot-pounds. Pivot the wiper arm nut cover downward and over the nut, and press it toward the nut to lock its tabs.

    12

Lift up the rear wiper blade and remove the masking tape. Set the wiper blade back onto the rear window.
