How to Troubleshoot Driveshafts

In simple terms, the driveshaft on a vehicle is responsible for delivering power to the wheels, so it is vital that it be in working order. You have to be conscious of the common problems which can occur with your driveshaft, including unusual sounds coming from that area, structural damage on the driveshaft and bad vibrations when you are driving your automobile. Although many problems with a key component of your vehicle may have to be fixed by an expert, you can do a certain amount of the diagnosing by yourself.

Instructions

    1

Listen for any telltale signs that something may be wrong with your driveshaft. If a ping, snap or click is heard from the drive line moments after the transmission has been put into gear, it indicates loose bushing bolts on the upper or lower arm of your driveshaft. To remedy this issue you need to tighten the driveshaft bolts to the torque level specified by your particular vehicle's user manual.

    2

Visually inspect the driveshaft for any bumps, bends or dents which may be present. This is often the cause of vibrations or body booms when you are driving the vehicle under normal conditions. You should have the driveshaft replaced in this case, as continuing to drive an automobile with a structurally damaged driveshaft can do further damage to the vehicle.

    3

Inspect your tires if you are getting an uncomfortable ride when you go over around 40 mph. Unbalanced or worn tires can be responsible for this and they will damage your driveshaft further until you have them replaced or rebalanced.

    4

Test drive the vehicle, while feeling for vibration in the floor pan and the seat. This is an indication that the driveshaft is fundamentally unbalanced and you will need to take it to an expert for inspection and, perhaps, replacement.
