A car's ignition system consists of the ignition switch, and the lock cylinder that is often mistaken for the switch. A car's failure to start often means that replacement of the ignition switch is required. The cylinder must occasionally be replaced, primarily for extra security. This procedure varies depending on the make and model of a vehicle.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Disconnect the negative cable-clamp from the battery. The cable is black, and a wrench is usually required.

    2

Remove the screws from the trim covers on the steering column; the screws are usually located on the lower half of the covers. Separate the covers from one another.

    3

Insert your ignition key into the ignition lock-cylinder. Turn it left to the accessory position, or right to the start position. The direction required varies by model.

    4

Insert a thin screwdriver into the small hole in the lock cylinder's casing; this depresses the locking tab on the cylinder. Pull the key and cylinder out of the casing.

    5

Disconnect the wiring for the ignition switch, and remove the mounting screws with your screwdriver. On some models a central bolt must be removed. Remove the switch from the steering column.

Installation

    6

Connect the wiring to the replacement ignition switch, Mount it in place with its corresponding screws and bolts.

    7

Insert the key into the lock cylinder. Insert the key and cylinder into the casing, The cylinder must be inserted in the same position -- start or accessory -- as when it was removed.

    8

Turn the cylinder to the "off" position, and lock it in place.

    9

Reconnect the trim covers, placing the upper cover on the column. Connect the lower cover and apply the screws.

    10

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.
