As it did with all F-series pickups, Ford provided customers with a wide array of optional equipment, among them four engine types, air conditioning and a trailer hitch. One component buyers had no choice on was power steering, as it was standard on all trim levels of the 2001 F-250. Typically, replacing a pulley on the power steering pump requires removing the pump. The 2001 F-250, though, has enough clearance in its engine compartment to remove the pulley with the pump installed, easing the process greatly.

Removal

    Check the fan shroud for the serpentine belts routing diagram. If it is missing or illegible, draw a diagram of how the belt routes over all the pulleys. Draw an arrow on the belt with a grease crayon pointing in the direction the belt moves when the engine is running.

    Raise the F-250 off the ground with a floor jack and slide jack stands under the frame rails. Lower the truck onto the jack stands. Crawl beneath the truck and find the serpentine belt tensioner. On F-250s with air conditioning, the tensioner is between the crankshaft pulley and the air conditioning pulley. On trucks without air conditioning, the tensioner is on the bottom of the engine on the passengers side.

    Insert a 3/8-inch ratchet in the square hole on the end of the tensioner pulley and turn the tensioner clockwise if the truck has air conditioning, or counterclockwise if it does not have air conditioning to relieve tension from the belt. Pull the belt from all the pulleys.

    Inspect the belt for any defects, including: cracks, splits, fraying, haze or excessive aging. If any defects exist, replace the belt.

    Hand-tighten the screw part from a power steering pulley removal and installation kit into the power steering pumps shaft. Tighten the pulling nut on the remover until its flange contacts the pulley. Place a snug-fitting adapter onto the flange on the pulley and the pulling nut, then slide the retaining ring over the adapter the adapter, pulling nut and retaining ring come in the power steering pulley removal and installation kit.

    Hold the pulling nut steady with a combination wrench and turn the screw part of the puller clockwise with a ratchet and socket until the pulley is free from the power steering pump.

Installation

    Slide the pulley onto the power steering shaft as far as you can by hand. Hand-tighten the screw part of the power steering pulley removal and installation kit into the power steering pumps shaft.

    Thread the power steering pulley-driving nut onto the screw attached to the power steering pumps shaft until it contacts the middle of the pulley.

    Hold the screw attached to the power steering pumps shaft with a combination wrench and tighten the driving nut with a combination wrench until it seats onto the power steering pumps shaft. Loosen the driving nut and remove the screw from the power steering pumps shaft.

    Route the belt over all the pulleys, except the tensioner pulley, using the belt routing diagram as a guide. Turn the serpentine belt tensioner clockwise or counterclockwise with a 3/8-inch ratchet, depending if the truck has air conditioning or not, and align the serpentine belt with the tensioner pulley. Allow the belt tensioner to rotate slowly toward the belt until it applies full tension to the belt. Remove the ratchet from the tensioner.

    Raise the truck from the jack stands with a floor jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the F-250 to the ground.
