Prior to a mid-generation update in 2001, the 1997 through 2000 model year Ford Rangers remained fairly similar. The 2000 Ranger included power options such as electric windows and door locks. The power locks derive their kinetic energy from door lock actuators. These actuators, housed inside the doors, open or close depending on the direction indicated by the activation of the power lock switch. Once energized, the actuator pushes or pulls a small rod in its head. This rod connects to the door latch rod, which allows the actuator to lock or unlock the door.
Instructions
- 1
Open the Ranger's window. Pry the window switch bezel from the door panel using a trim tool. Unplug the switches from the door harness.
2Remove the two screws behind the bezel using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the retaining screw located at the lower trailing edge of the door panel using a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the door panel up and off the door and set it aside.
3Connect the power window switch to the body harness temporarily. Close the Ranger's window.
4Unplug the body harness connector from the door lock actuator. Remove the bolt holding the door lock actuator to the inside door bracket using a socket wrench, socket extension and 8 mm socket.
5Rotate the door lock actuator to unhook the latch rod from the actuator. Remove the old actuator from the door and set it aside.
6Hook the new actuator onto the door latch rod. Bolt the new actuator to the inner door bracket using the socket, extension and wrench. Plug the body harness into the lock actuator.
7Open the Ranger's window. Disconnect the power window switch from the body harness.
8Lower the door panel onto the door. Reinstall the door panel retaining screws.
9Plug the window and lock switches into the body harness. Snap the switch bezel back into the door panel.
