Installing an aftermarket upgraded stereo in a 1998 GMC Jimmy can be accomplished with minimal tools. If you are intending to upgrade the Jimmy's radio, pick one with 50 watts per channel or higher. Radios are sold by total wattage that must be divided between the number of speakers. A 200-watt radio has 50 watts per channel. Many aftermarket speakers can handle more than 100 watts of power.

Disconnect the negative battery cable using a wrench. Pull off the fascia trim surrounding the radio and heater control head from the center of the dash It is secured with metal snap clips on the end of the plastic trim tabs behind the fascia. Be very gentle and pull the trim off as close to the fasteners as possible to prevent breakage.
2Remove the bolts securing the top of the radio to the dash using a nut driver. Remove the two bolts above the heater control panel using a nut driver. Pull the panel out far enough to remove the radio.
3Pull the radio out far enough to disconnect the radio plug and antenna wire from the back of the radio. Remove the bolts in the radio carrier using a nut driver, then pull the carrier off the radio.
4Plug the radio harness pigtail adapter into the vehicle harness. Assemble the radio faceplate adapter per the adapter kit's instructions. You may need to use the original metal carrier to secure the radio to the dash.
5Hold the fascia trim over the radio with the faceplate installed to make sure it fills the hole in the fascia properly. Hold the radio close to the hole in the dash and connect the radio harness pigtail adapter to the radio. Push the radio antenna wire into the receptacle in the back of the radio.
6Push the radio, faceplate adapter and metal carrier, if needed, into the recess in the dash. Screw the two bolts into place to secure the radio to the dash. Install the heater control panel to the dash. Install the trim fascia by aligning the plastic tabs with the corresponding holes in the dash and gently pushing them in until they snap tight.
7Connect the negative battery cable and tighten it with a wrench.
