How to Install Fram PS9059A

While Fram has long been known as a manufacturer of a wide range of oil filters, they also produce air and fuel filters. Fram's PS9059A filter is a heavy-duty fuel water separator filter that works on 2001 through 2008 GM heavy-duty trucks and vans with Duramax diesel engines. Water in your diesel fuel can cause damage to your engine as well as decreased power.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood of the truck or van and locate the priming equipment for the engine. On most of these vehicles, this is located on the passenger side of the engine compartment, just below the air intake duct.

    2

Unscrew the clamps that hold the air intake duct in place, and then remove it from the engine compartment.

    3

Remove the passenger side front wheel well from the truck. Look inside the wheel well and you will see plastic mounting clips that hold the wheel well in place. Pry these out with a flat screwdriver.

    4

Push aside the corrugated black hoses in the wheel well and you will see two canisters. The canister on the left is the air conditioning evaporator unit. Immediately to its right is the fuel filter. It has a two-wire harness attached to it. Unplug this harness from the corrugated tube to which it is attached by squeezing the tab and pulling the harness out.

    5

Place a plastic drain pan under where you are working to catch overflowing fluid, and then use the adjustable wrench to grasp the fuel filter and loosen it. Once loosened, it will spin off easily.

    6

Unscrew the bottom portion of the fuel filter assembly carefully to remove the water separator from the fuel filter. Once it is removed, mount it onto the Fram PS9059A utilizing the O-ring included in the Fram packaging. Before installing the O-ring, however, lubricate it with a small amount of diesel fuel. Do the same with the O-ring on the top of the Fram filter before installing it.

    7

Screw the Fram filter into the place where you removed the filter, and then reconnect the wiring harness from the water separator. The wheel well of the truck can now be reassembled.

    8

Prime the fuel filter with diesel fuel by first looking down into the engine compartment where you removed the air duct. You will see a black cylinder that is approximately 2 inches in diameter with a dimple in the top. Beside it is a black plastic screw. Remove this screw, and then press down on the cylinder until you see diesel fuel come out of the screw. This pumps fuel into the fuel filter.

    9

Tighten down the screw, and then reinstall the air duct into the engine to complete the installation of the replacement Fram filter.
