Dana is an American company that produces drive-line products for cars, trucks and heavy equipment. The Dana 44 is a solid drive axle that is used on the front of many four-wheel-drive vehicles, such as full-sized Chevrolet trucks, Chevrolet Blazers, Ford F150s, full-sized Ford Broncos, Jeep J10 and J20 pickups and Jeep Grand Wagoneers. Over time, the bearings and other components of the hub may need to be replaced or rebuilt, necessitating its removal.
Instructions
- 1
Place a floor jack under the front frame rail, nearest to the hub to be removed. Loosen the wheel lug nuts one turn with a lug wrench. Raise the jack until the tire is no longer touching the ground. Place a jack stand under the frame rail, then lower the floor jack. Remove the lug nuts and the wheel and tire assembly.
2Remove the six screws from the outer hub with a hex key wrench. Pull the outer hub straight out and place it aside.
3Remove the large outer snap ring revealed after removing the outer hub, using a pair of snap ring pliers. Remove the inner snap ring surrounding the splined shaft in the same fashion.
4Pull the drive cog gear assembly surrounding the splined shaft straight out of the hub assembly and place it aside.
5Loosen the hub nut by placing a flat-blade screwdriver in one of the slots on the nut and tapping it with a hammer in a counterclockwise direction. Finish removing the nut by hand.
6Pull the hub assembly straight off the steering spindle.
