The 2001 Ford F-150 4x4 has ball joints that act as the connector between the steering system of the truck and the truck's wheels. Without the ball joints, you cannot steer your vehicle. If the ball joints are damaged in an accident or wear out over time, replace them as soon as you can. Replacement ball joints can be purchased at most automotive-repair shops or through your local Ford dealership. You can replace the ball joints of your F-150 in under an hour.

Loosen the nuts from the front wheel on which you are making the repair using a wheel wrench. Do not remove them.
2Place a jack underneath the F-150 and raise it up. Support the F-150's front end with jack stands. Remove the nuts from the front wheel and remove the front wheel.
3Detach the steering knuckle from the control arm by using a socket wrench to remove its bolts.
4Remove the snap ring from the ball joint you wish to replace. Remove the bolts from the ball joint with a socket wrench. Use a ball joint prong to remove the ball joint from the control arm.
5Place the replacement ball joint onto the control arm and reattach the bolts. Place a new snap ring onto the ball joint.
6Reattach the steering knuckle to the control arm by reinstalling the bolts.
7Reattach the front wheel and their nuts. Remove the jack stands. Lower the F-150 and remove the jack.
