The camshaft position sensor on a 1999 Dodge Neon is simple to access as it is located on the rear of the cylinder head. There are magnetic poles on the camshaft that spin in close proximity to camshaft sensor, causing voltage spikes used by the computer to adjust the timing and fuel injection for startup. The camshaft sensor also doubles as a block to limit camshaft endplay.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood and locate the camshaft sensor on the drivers side of the cylinder head. Unplug the sensors electrical connector.

    2

Remove the bolts securing the sensor to the block using a socket. Twist the sensor slightly as you remove it.

    3

Install the new sensor onto the cylinder head, guiding the metal pins on the sensor into the locating holes in the camshaft. Align the sensor bolt holes with those in the cylinder head. Install the bolts and snug them down to 7 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket. Plug the electrical connector into the new camshaft sensor.
