The strut assembly is responsible for ride cushioning and, to a certain extent, steering quality. If you find that your car bounces too much or dives during braking, you may want to consider replacing the struts.
Instructions
- 1
Using the floor jack, lift the front right wheel and remove it with the lug wrench. Place the jack stand securely under the frame of the vehicle and gently lower the floor jack until the car is supported by the jack stand. Locate the strut assembly and observe the two bolts securing it to the steering knuckle. Using the breaker bar and a socket, loosen and then remove the two strut assembly bolts. In the engine compartment, locate the three bolts securing the top of the strut assembly. Using the ratchet and a socket, loosen and remove them. Gently maneuver the strut assembly down and out through the wheel well.
2Examine the spring for damage. Using the spring compressor, carefully compress the spring until the load is removed from the strut bushing and bolt assembly. Using the breaker bar and a socket, loosen and then remove the top bolt. Carefully release the spring compressor and then remove the strut and discard. Insert the new strut and bushing into the spring, compress the spring, and then tighten the top bolt.
3Maneuver the strut assembly into the wheel well and attach the top three screws. Using the floor jack, lift the steering knuckle until it engages the bottom of the strut assembly and the bolt holes align sufficiently so that you can insert the bolts. Using the ratchet and a socket, tighten the strut bolts.
4Repeat steps 1 through 3 with the opposite wheel. When complete, double check the strut bolts for tightness. Arrange to have the wheel alignment checked and, if necessary, corrected.
