Ford kept the Escort alive from 1981 through the 2000 model year and finally removed it from its lineup in 2001. In the 2000 model year, Ford released the Escort's replacement -- the Focus. The focus had more modern and aggressive styling, with its hard body lines and exaggerated headlights. In 2005, Ford redesigned the Focus, giving a more refined look. The 2005 Focus came standard with a passive anti-theft system (PATS for short), which used a transponder key to transmit a signal that allowed the car to start. When getting a new key, the key requires programming before it can become usable. The transponder key has two programming processes: one using two pre-programmed keys and another using an on-board diagnostics II tool.

Instructions

With Two Programmed Keys

    1

Insert the first programmed key in the ignition and turn the key to the "Run" position for one second, turn the ignition back to the "Off" position and remove the key.

    2

Insert the second programmed key within five seconds of removing the first key, and turn the ignition to the "Run" position. Turn the key to the "Off" position after one second in the "Run" position and remove the key.

    3

Insert the unprogrammed key into the ignition within 10 seconds of removing the second programmed key and turn the key to the "Run" position for one second. Turn the key to the "Off" position and remove it.

    4

Insert the newly-programmed key and attempt to start the Focus. If it does not start, repeat Steps 1 through 3.

    5

Repeat Steps 1 through 4 for any additional unprogrammed keys.

Without Two Programmed Keys

    6

Insert the unprogrammed key in the ignition and turn it to the "Run" position.

    7

Turn on the OBD-II diagnostic tool and direct it to the "Security Access" function. Wait approximately 10 minutes with the key in the "Run" position for the OBD-II tool to access the security system.

    8

Select "Ignition Key Code Program" from the "Security Access" program. Wait for the OBD-II scanner to confirm the programming of the key.

    9

Turn the ignition off and attempt to start the vehicle. If the car does not start immediately, remove the key and repeat Steps 1 through 3.

    10

Repeat Steps 1 through 4 for any other unprogrammed keys.
