Pulling the FS5W71C front main bearing of a Nissan transmission is necessary to replace a worn-out bearing and repair the transmission. The front main bearing sits behind the transmission housing cover on the clutch shaft and can be removed by taking the cover off the transmission housing to access the shaft. You can pull the FS5W71C front main bearing yourself in about three or four hours with some basic automotive tools.

Instructions

    1

Unfasten the negative battery cable from the battery post of the Nissan with an open-end wrench and move the cable out of the way. Place wood blocks behind the rear wheel. Lift the front of the vehicle with a floor jack.

    2

Slide jack stands under the front axle near both front wheels. Lower the vehicle onto the jack stands. Verify that you have enough room to work comfortably underneath the vehicle.

    3

Detach the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold underneath the engine with an open-end wrench and slide the pipe away from the manifold. Unfasten the switches from the side of the transmission housing by disconnecting the plugs. Unfasten the speedometer cable from the transmission with an open-end wrench.

    4

Unfasten the bolts that secure the drive shaft to the transmission with a socket wrench. Put a plug in the back of the transmission housing to prevent the transmission oil from leaking. Detach the clutch slave cylinder with the socket wrench. Detach the rubber boot and console.

    5

Put the manual transmission in neutral. Disconnect the circlip and shifter with the socket wrench. Move the floor jack under the transmission housing, placing a wood block on the jack to protect the transmission. Support the transmission with the jack.

    6

Place a drain pan under the front of the transmission housing cover on the ground. Unfasten the bolts holding the housing cover to the transmission with the socket wrench. Remove the transmission housing cover and set it out of the way.

    7

Unfasten the front bearing cap from the clutch shaft. Remove the bearing cap, oil seal and shim from the shaft. Slide the FS5W71C front main bearing off the clutch shaft.
