If the key cylinder on your 1989 F350 pickup truck goes bad, your truck will not start. It can be expensive to have a mechanic or dealership remove and replace this unit, but you can remove the unit yourself with some patience and basic tools.

Locate the battery under the hood of your truck and remove the negative connection, using a wrench.
2Disengage the tab on the steering column shroud by applying pressure to the upper and lower end of the shroud. If your 1989 F350 pickup truck comes equipped with tilt steering, remove the upper extension shroud attached to the steering column.
3Remove the steering column covers with a screwdriver.
4Locate and detach the key "warning" switch from the cylinder.
5Put the ignition key in the "On" position.
6Insert an awl tool into the hole on the housing that holds the lock cylinder. Push the lock retaining pin at the same time that you pull the lock cylinder away from the housing.
