The ignition lock cylinder is mounted on the steering column of your 1999 GMC Jimmy, and it connects to the ignition switch through a mechanical assembly. Although secured in the steering column, the cylinder is relatively accessible. Still, you need to follow certain precautions to remove it safely. Whether you need to remove the cylinder to gain access to the switch or replace it, you can perform this repair job at home using a few simple tools.
Instructions
Preparation
- 1
Turn the steering wheel so that both front wheels point straight ahead.
2Set the ignition key to the "Lock" position and remove the key. Open the hood.
3Disconnect the negative black battery cable using a wrench.
4Pull out the fuse for the air bag from the fuse box under the instrument panel, using a fuse puller. This fuse should be identified right on the fuse box.
5Unfasten the lower panel under the instrument panel and steering column using a ratchet, short ratchet extension and socket.
6Unplug the yellow two-way connector at the base of the steering column. If your GMC Jimmy comes equipped with a passenger side air bag, disconnect the yellow two-way connector located behind the glove box as well.
Ignition Cylinder Removal
- 7
Detach the steering column from under the instrument panel using a ratchet, large ratchet extension and socket. When ready, carefully lower the steering column.
8Unfasten the screws holding the upper column shroud, using a Phillips screwdriver. Detach the screws holding the lower column shroud using a Torx screwdriver.
9Tilt down the lower column shroud, disengage the locking tabs and remove it.
10Move the upper column shroud up just enough to gain access to the ignition key cylinder housing.
11Insert the key into the key cylinder and rotate the key to the "Start" position, as if you were going to crank the engine. Hold the key in this position.
12Locate the small hole on the upper side of the ignition key cylinder housing and insert a 1/16-inch Allen wrench through the hole. Push the Allen wrench through the hole to disengage the cylinder-locking pin.
13Turn the ignition key to the "Run" position. Pull the lock cylinder out of its housing using the ignition key.
14Make a note of the position of the ignition key in the lock cylinder. When you are ready to reinstall or replace the lock cylinder, the key should be in the "Run" position. Follow these steps in reverse order to replace the cylinder.
