In 1997, Oldsmobile released its sporty midsize sedan, the Intrigue, as part of its attempt to regain interest from younger buyers. Despite its modern look and feel, the Intrigue lasted just five model years. The 2001 Intrigue came standard with a 215-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine. Removing the battery in the 2001 Intrigue is tricky, as there is a small brace blocking the battery's path out of the engine. Overall, however, the removal process is relatively straightforward.

Instructions

    1

Open the Intrigues hood and find the battery on the front passengers side of the engine compartment. Loosen the bolt at the end of the negative battery cable the black cable with a ratchet and socket, and pull the negative cable from the battery. Remove the bolts securing the diagonal brace above the battery, using a ratchet and socket, and remove the diagonal brace.

    2

Pull the cover from the end of the positive battery cable the red cable to expose the cable end. Loosen the bolt on the positive cable end with a ratchet and socket, and remove the positive cable end from the battery.

    3

Remove the bolt securing the battery hold-down block, the plastic block at the base of the battery, using a ratchet and socket. Pull the battery hold-down block from the battery.

    4

Pull the battery from the engine compartment. Use extreme caution because the battery is heavy for its size.

    5

Remove the foam-like insulator from the battery and transfer it to the new battery, aligning the holes in the insulator with the battery terminals.

    6

Lower the new battery onto its tray in the engine compartment carefully, with its terminals facing the drivers side of the vehicle.

    7

Reinstall the battery hold-down block and hand-thread its retaining bolt. Tighten the battery hold-down blocks bolt to 13 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.

    8

Set the positive battery cable end on the positive terminal on the battery, the one with the + above it, and hand-tighten the bolt on the cable end. Torque the bolt to 11 foot-pounds. Position the negative cable end onto the negative terminal on the battery, the one with the - above it, and hand-tighten the cable ends bolt. Torque the bolt to 11 foot-pounds.

    9

Install the diagonal brace into place over the battery and snug its retaining bolts with a ratchet and socket.
