The all-wheel drive, or AWD, on the Oldsmobile Bravada sport utility vehicle is constant and does not need driver interaction to switch it from two-wheel to four-wheel drive like some older types of all-wheel drives. SmartTrak is the proprietary name for this AWD system in the Bravada. The onboard diagnostic code system on the Bravada AWD will activate a check engine light if there is a problem the driver should know about. To attain the trouble codes for the Bravada, a code scanner tool is used. Practically all auto parts stores have these hand-held scanners available for use for free.
Instructions
- 1
Park the Bravada on a flat and level surface and engage the parking brake.
2Kneel down on the outside of the driver's side door, and look under the dash to locate the diagnostic plug port. It is a small, black rectangle with a small cover on it marked "DTC" for Diagnostic Trouble Code. Remove the cap and plug the scanner wire into the port.
3Turn the key to the "On" position but do not start the engine. Turn the scanner on and press the "Run Test" button.
4Copy down the trouble codes given by the computer with a pen and paper. Turn the scanner off and unplug it from the port. Replace the port's cover. Turn the key off and remove it from the Bravada's ignition.
5Look up the codes in the owner's manual or have the auto parts store attendant run the codes through the store's computer system to pinpoint the exact problem.
