The blower motor resistor for your 2001 Dodge Dakota plays a very important role in regulating the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system. The resistor restricts the flow of electric current to the blower motor, depending on the position selected on the fan speed dial switch. A faulty blower resistor will cause one or several restricted fan speed selections to stop working.

Instructions

    1

Turn off the vehicle and ensure the ignition is set to the OFF position. Engage the parking brake or put the transmission gear selector in park.

    2

Open the passenger side door and examine the underside of the dashboard, directly below the glove compartment. Locate the black-colored plastic blower motor housing and HVAC ducting.

    3

Remove the single 5/16-inch screw that secures the single duct piece to the blower motor housing using the appropriate socket and ratchet. This will allow you to gain access to the two screws that secure the blower motor resistor to the housing.

    4

Remove the two 5/16-inch screws that secure the rectangular-shaped blower resistor to the blower motor housing using the appropriate socket, extension and ratchet; you will need to hold down the duct to gain access to the screws.

    5

Pull the blower motor resistor out of the housing. Push the red-colored tab, located on the wire harness connection for the resistor, to the side. While holding the red-colored tab, depress the small black locking tab on the wire connector to aid in the disconnection process.

    6

Remove the four small ears around the screw hole tabs for the new resistor unit using a pair of snips. The replacement unit is designed to work with several different applications. Removing the small ears will allow the unit to properly fit in Dakota and Durango vehicles.

    7

Connect the wire harness connection to the new resistor unit. Slide the new unit into the appropriate mounting area on the blower motor housing.

    8

Secure the new resistor unit to the blower motor housing, using the original 5/16-inch screws, socket, extension and ratchet.

    9

Secure the duct to the blower motor housing using the remaining 5/16-inch screw, appropriate size socket and ratchet to complete the installation process.
