How to Install a Starter in a 1998 VW Jetta GL

When you turn the key in your 1998 Volkswagen Jetta and nothing happens, you just hear a click, or the engine turns very slowly but does not start; it could be time to replace the starter. But, before you head to the parts store, check for loose, corroded or cracked battery terminals. Also, check the positive and negative battery cables to confirm there are no loose connections or frayed spots in the cables. Having a starter replaced at a repair shop can be expensive. However, with some common tools, you can do it yourself. It will save you money and time waiting around at the shop.

Instructions

    1

Park your Jetta on a flat level surface such as a driveway or garage with either a concrete or asphalt surface. Do not attempt to support the car with jack stands on a dirt or grass area. The weight of the vehicle could cause the jack stands to sink into the ground. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Raise the car using a floor jack. Place jack stands under the frame. Lower the car onto the jack stands.

    2

Place a block of wood on the floor jack and raise it until it comes into contact with the oil pan, if you have an A3 Jetta with the starter bolts running through the engine mount bracket. Do not jack the car from the oil pan. The floor jack is only there for support. The starter is mounted on the transaxle at the front of the engine compartment.

    3

Mark the wires connected to the starter solenoid so you will know where they are connected. You could also take a picture with a cell phone or digital camera. Remove the nuts securing the small wires to the solenoid using a combination wrench. Remove the nut holding the positive battery cable to the solenoid using a combination wrench.

    4

Remove the two lower mounting bolts using a ratchet and socket. While supporting the starter, remove the upper mounting bolt using a ratchet and socket. Remove the started from the transaxle. Use caution as the starter is heavy.

    5

Set the replacement starter in position in the transaxle. This may require a slight movement back and forth to line up the starter. Install the upper mounting bolt. Install the two lower mounting bolts. Connect the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid. Connect the small wires to the solenoid.

    6

Lower the floor jack from under the oil pan. Position the jack under the frame. Raise the car off the jack stands. Remove the jack stands. Lower the car to the ground. Connect the negative battery cable.
