The 1965 Mustang ignition switch has a simple design and is not complicated to connect. The coil used in the 1965 Mustang is a 6-volt design and must use a ballast resister to drop the voltage to the coil. Everything else is straight 12 volts. The Mustang has a pink ballast resistor wire as standard wiring for the coil. This should be maintained unless installing upgraded components.
Instructions
- 1
Disconnect the negative (black) battery cable. Install the main power wire from the battery to the center post on the switch marked with a B+ and tighten the nut on the post with a wrench.
2Install the pink wire from the coil to the ignition switch on the terminal marked "Ign." To this same terminal, attach the gauges, windshield wipers and heater wires. You want all of these to operate only when the switch is on and have no power when the ignition is off.
3Connect the radio wire to the terminal marked "ACC" for accessories. This terminal has power in both the run position and the accessories position as well. When the engine is shut off, the only thing that you want to come on in the accessory position is the radio, so the battery doesn't drain.
4Reconnect the negative battery cable.
