How to Repair a Murray Peerless Drive System

Murray is a producer of walk-behind mowers, ride-on mowers, snow-throwers and trimmers -- making them a key player in the garden maintenance business. Many of these units utilize a Murray peerless drive system. It is vital for this component to be in proper working order to engage movement in your mower, and with the right knowledge you can fix many of the issues that could be affecting the transmission.

Instructions

    1

Fix excess noise coming from the unit by thoroughly cleaning the unit of any bits of broken metal, loose washers or other debris. You should also top up the oil level if it is not filled to the indicated requisite level.

In more serious cases you may have to fit new gears to the unit to remedy the problem of an excessively noisy unit.

    2

Replace worn springs or worn gears to remedy the issue of the unit regularly jumping out of gear. This is often due to the teeth of the gears being worn beyond tolerance or the spring in the shifter fork being weak.

    3

Tighten the axle housing bolts using an adjustable wrench to fix an issue with the axle housing being erroneously installed (not tight enough). This will fix the issue of the axles being unable to turn in the same direction while in neutral.

    4

Replace any broken mechanisms that could be responsible for the transmission unit failing to start. These often include the differential bevel gears, a broken input gear or broken shift keys.
