The 1997 model year marked the end of the Corolla DX wagon and the release of the all-new CE sedan. The 1997 model year was also the final year of the Corolla's seventh generation. The following year Toyota replaced the Corolla's seemingly bland appearance with harder body lines as well as updated headlights and taillights. The 1997 Corolla's plain lighting system did have its benefits, as replacing the side marker lamp in this system is a straightforward task that any do-it-yourself mechanic can complete.

Instructions

    1

Open the Corolla's hood, and find the side marker assembly-retaining screw -- just inside of the fender. Remove the retaining screw, using a Phillips screwdriver.

    2

Pull the side marker assembly forward slightly and then away from the Corolla's fender. Twist the side marker socket -- located on the rear of the side marker assembly -- counterclockwise to unlock it, and pull the socket from the side marker assembly.

    3

Grab the old bulb and pull it from the socket, using a slight wiggling motion. Grab a new type 194 light bulb, with a clean, lint-free cloth and press it into the socket.

    4

Insert the socket and new bulb into the side marker assembly, and twist the socket clockwise to lock it into place.

    5

Set the side marker assembly back in its bed on the Corolla's front fender, guiding the pins on the rear of the assembly into the holes in the fender. Tighten the side marker-retaining screw with a Phillips screwdriver.

    6

    Close the Corolla's hood.
