The Chevrolet Astro van uses a computer to control various sensors and other functions for engine management. When one of the components malfunctions, the computer stores a code and sends a signal to the engine light, turning it on, to alert the driver that there is a problem. For example, if the mixture is wrong because of a bad plug or plug wire, the values from the oxygen sensor will be off, which causes the computer to store an oxygen sensor code -- the oxygen sensor may not even be the problem. Thus it is imperative that you make sure all other systems are working properly.

Instructions

    1

Plug the code scanner into the data link port under the driver's-side dash, and just to the left of the steering column.

    2

Turn the key to the "On" position. Press the "Read" button on the scanner.

    3

Write down the codes displayed on the scanner's LED readout. Compare the codes to the code sheet that comes with the scanner, to learn the definition of the code. Turn the key off and unplug the scanner. Repair the problem area.

    4

Plug the scanner into the data link port. Turn the key to the "On" position. Press the "Erase" button. The scanner will clear the codes. Test-drive the vehicle to ensure that the engine light stays off and you repaired the problem.
