The thermostat in a Dodge Stratus controls the cooling system, keeping the car from overheating. If this critical part is not functioning properly, your car may overheat, even during normal driving conditions. You can install a new thermostat yourself in just a few hours.

Drain the coolant from the system.

Drain the coolant into an approved container, by removing the coolant drain plug and allowing the coolant to drop to a level below the thermostat.

Remove the coolant recovery hose

This is a hose that is attached directly to the cover over the thermostat. The coolant flows through here and is monitored by the thermostat.

Remove the coolant elbow

There is a plastic elbow-shaped part that covers the thermostat. Remove the mounting bolts and open this cover to reveal the thermostat.

Replace the thermostat

Unscrew the thermostat from its housing and clean any debris from the sealing surfaces before replacing it. Insert the new thermostat and tighten it down into the housing. Replace the elbow cover and coolant hose.

Refill the system and test

Refill the coolant levels to normal. Run the vehicle for 10-20 minutes to make sure the engine doesn't overheat by monitoring the temperature gauge.
