Trucks used by off-road enthusiasts can benefit from a heavy-duty transmission such as the 4R100 due to its upgrade options and maintenance requirements. Before you install a 4R100 transmission in an off-road vehicle it may require a rebuild. Rebuilding the transmission requires the replacing or refurbishing of any worn out parts inside the unit. You can undertake the task of rebuilding a 4R100 transmission if you are willing.

Instructions

    1

Find the mounting bolts that are along the outside of the transmission. Remove these bolts by using the socket wrench. Pull the bell housing and pinion rods out of the casing.

    2

Locate the rear pinon gears that are positioned on the lower section of the three control arms. These are the lower control arm, the upper control arm and the gear shift.

    3

Attach a new rear gear from the rebuild kit into the slot on each control arm. Tighten the set screws that are found in the middle of each pinion with the Allen wrench.

    4

Pull out the spindle shafts from the transmission. These are the two long shafts that appear to extend all the way through the transmission. Grind down any nicks on the shafts with an angle grinder.

    5

Replace the housing bushing with a new part, if necessary. Place the spindle shafts back into the 4R100 transmission.

    6

Remove the old gasket from the bell housing and replace the gasket with a new part. Re-attach the bell housing to the casing and tighten the mounting bolts.
