How to Install a Disc in a Chevy Truck

Many Chevy trucks of recent vintage feature disc brakes at the front wheels and most new Chevy trucks feature discs on all four wheels. The discs must be replaced when they become worn down at or below their minimum thickness as described on the disc itself or in the owner's manual. Replacing the disc rotor is a relatively easy job that requires a few basic tools.

Instructions

    1

Wipe the brake disc off with a clean shop towel to remove any grease or other residue. Apply a thin coat of anti-seize lubricant on the back of the disc.

    2

Grasp the disc with both hands and carefully slide it onto the wheel hub. Place the caliper mounting bracket over the disc and insert the two retaining bolts into the back of the hub assembly. Tighten the bolts with a ratchet and socket.

    3

Place the brake caliper over the disc and onto the bracket. Insert the two retaining bolts into the caliper and tighten them with the ratchet and socket. Repeat the procedure for the other side, if necessary.

    4

Mount the wheels onto the hub and hand-tighten the wheel lugs into place. Remove any jack stands used to support the vehicle and lower it to the ground with a floor jack. Use a torque wrench to tighten the wheel lugs to 140 foot-pounds.
