Dodge introduced the Dakota pickup in 1987 and created a new size-class the mid-size. First-generation Dakotas were produced from 1987 to 1996. Second-generation models were produced from 1997 to 2004. 2003 Dakotas were powered by a 3.9-liter V-6, a 4.7-liter V-8, or a 5.9-liter V-8 and available in two- or four-wheel drive. The instrument cluster on the 2003 Dakota can be replaced with very little disassembly.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Park the Dakota on a level surface and set the parking brake.

    2

Place the shifter in Low if you have an automatic transmission. If you have a tilt column, place it in the lowest position.

    3

Remove the two screws from the underside of the instrument cluster bezel with a Phillips screwdriver. They are above the instrument cluster.

    4

Use a trim tool to carefully pry around the perimeter of the bezel. Note that it extends out past the radio. Pull the bezel away from the dash and set aside.

    5

Remove the four screws that attach the instrument cluster to the dash with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull out the cluster far enough so you can disconnect the two electrical connectors. Remove the cluster.

Installation

    6

Set the cluster in place and connect the electrical connectors.

    7

    Install and tighten the screws.

    8

Push the bezel onto the dash.

    9

    Install and tighten the screws.
