The AEM FIC (fuel and ignition controller) is an aftermarket fuel and ignition controller manufactured by AEM Performance Electronics. The fuel ignition controller on the Mazda Protege works in conjunction with the vehicle's electronic control unit to increase fueling boosts and self-adjust vehicle timing. A malfunctioning fuel and ignition controller can lead to a wide variety of problems, ranging from engine misfire to triggered check engine alarms and stalling. Installing this piggyback system will take one to two hours.

Instructions

    1

Raise the hood of the Protege, and remove the negative ("-") battery cable with the adjustable wrench

    2

Unplug the wiring harnesses on the old fuel ignition controller, which is mounted near the driver's side fender well. One wiring harness will connect to the Protege's electronic control unit. The other will connect to the ignition system.

    3

Remove the vacuum hose running from the old controller to the manifold. To remove, loosen the connection with a Phillips screwdriver and pull the hose from the side of the old controller.

    4

Remove the mounting bolts holding the old controller in place with the socket set. Set the new AEM controller in place and then insert the retaining bolts. Tighten these bolts with the socket set.

    5

Plug the electronic control unit electric wiring harness and the ignition wiring harness into the respective terminals on the new ignition fuel controller.

    6

Connect the vacuum hose to the hose port on the controller and tighten it with the screwdriver.

    7

Replace the Protege's negative ("-") battery cable with the adjustable wrench.
