The cooling system in your 2005 Chevrolet Silverado plays a vital role in keeping your truck operational. This system pumps engine coolant (antifreeze) through the engine block and out to the radiator, where the liquid coolant winds through a long, curved tube that has a fan blowing air onto it to dissipate the heat. The coolant is then pumped back to the engine block to begin the cycle again. At times, the coolant needs to be replaced because dirt and sediment can accumulate, which can lead to engine damage.
Instructions
- 1
Turn the Silverado's engine off and let it cool for 45 minutes.
2Go underneath the engine and locate the drain plug, which is usually on one end of the radiator. Place a drain pan directly underneath the drain plug.
3Open the drain plug and let the coolant flow into the drain pan. Remove the radiator cap from the top of the radiator. This equalizes the pressure inside the radiator and allows the coolant to flow out. Wear safety goggles and gloves when draining the coolant, as it is highly toxic. Avoid spilling the coolant on the ground or coming into direct contact with it.
4Disconnect the hose attached to the top of the radiator. Empty it into the drain pan, taking care not to spill the coolant on the ground.
5Place a garden hose in the opening at the top of the radiator.
6Turn the hose on and let the water run through the radiator until it comes out clear.
7Close the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator.
8Reconnect the radiator hose to the top of the radiator.
9Mix 1/2-gallon of new coolant with 1/2-gallon of distilled water in a clean container.
10Insert a funnel into the hole at the top of the radiator. Slowly pour the coolant mix into the radiator through the funnel. Don't pour it too fast because it takes time for the coolant mix to work its way through the radiator. Continue adding fluid until you can see it in the opening and no more air bubbles are coming up. Put the radiator cap back on.
11Pour the coolant mix into the reservoir until it fills to the line marked "minimum".
12Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Turn the engine off and allow it to cool for about a half-hour.
13Check the fluid levels in the reservoir and the radiator. If it's low, there may be a leak in the system and you need to take your truck to a mechanic.
