The water pump is a vital part of the Geo Tracker's engine. In fact, it is the heart of the cooling system, circulating the coolant. A faulty water pump can cause some serious damage to the engine of your Geo Tracker. Make sure to change out a bad water pump in order to prolong the life of your engine.
Instructions
1.8L Tracker Engine

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2Place a drain pan underneath the radiator and drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.
3Remove the upper radiator hose away from the housing to the thermostat.
4Loosen and remove the bolt to the heater outlet pipe and take the alternator belt.
5Take the four mounting bolts out of the water pump and loosen the dowel pin. Remove the pump from the engine, discarding the o-ring.
6Install the new water pump with the new o-ring, making sure that the dowel pins are mounted in the pump before you install it. Replace the four bolts with new bolts, tightening them to 221 foot pounds (25 Nm).
7Reinstall the heater outlet pipe bolt and alternator drive belt and reattach the thermostat housing and radiator hose.
8Refill the cooling system with coolant.
9Reattach the negative battery cable.
10Start the car and check for leaks when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
1.6L & 1.3L Engines

Disconnect the negative battery cable. Place a drain pan underneath the radiator and drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.
12Take off the timing belt cover, remove the timing belt, the plate, tensioner and spring.
13Loosen and remove the bolts to the water pump and remove the water pump, removing the rubber seals that lie between the oil pump and the water pump and cylinder head when doing so.
14clean the gasket mating surfaces of the water pump and reinstall the new pump with a new gasket, tightening the bolts to 88 to 115 foot pounds (10 to 13 Nm).
15Install a rubber seal between the oil pump and water pump and another in between the cylinder head and water pump.
16Reinstall all other components in the order in which they were removed.
17Refill the engine's cooling system with coolant.
18Reconnect the negative battery cable.
19Start the car and check for leaks when the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
