Sealed lead acid batteries are batteries that are commonly used for cars, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), scooters and golf carts. While most car batteries are mounted under the hood inside a battery box, in the case of ATVs and golf carts it is common for the battery to be mounted under a seat. Sealed lead acid batteries all produce a small amount of hydrogen gas. In small quantities, in ventilated areas, this gas is not harmful. However, if not ventilated, the gas can be explosive. The most efficient way to vent an under-seat battery is to house it inside a vented battery box, which is installed under the seat. The vents inside the battery box will allow air to circulate so there is no buildup of the gas.

Instructions

    1

Remove the keys from the vehicle's ignition.

    2

Lift up the seat of the vehicle to access the battery. The process for lifting the seat may differ depending on the vehicle. However, there is commonly a latch of some sort that is either pulled up or to the side in order to lift the seat.

    3

Remove the negative and positive battery cables with the adjustable wrench. Lift the battery out and set it aside. Be careful when lifting the battery, as batteries are heavier than they sometimes look.

    4

Set the battery box into the battery cavity. Insert the mounting bolts through the bottom of the battery box and tighten it with a nut driver.

    5

Replace the negative and positive battery cables with the adjustable wrench and then fasten the battery box cover in place according to instructions for the specific vented battery box installed.
