Permanently removing rust from most surfaces is possible, depending on the amount of rust that is present. Each surface requires special treatments so as not further damage the material. Rust damage can also be prevented in a number of ways.
Chrome
For rust spots on a chrome surface, first thoroughly clean the area with chrome cleaner and water to clearly see the rusted area. Then apply chrome polish to the affected area and to a piece of steel wool. Always rub gently in a circular motion with the steel wool , as rubbing too hard will result in scratches and more damage. Constantly maintain an ample supply of chrome cleaner while rubbing, as moisture will also guard against scratches. When the stain is no longer present, rinse the spot with clean water. Clean and polish the car to make it shine.
Metal
While many cleaning products exist for rust on metal, an organic and effective approach is using white vinegar with a touch of baking soda and lemon. If loose rust exists on the metal surface, first lightly scrub that away with a stainless steel sponge. If a small item is being cleaned, let it soak for twenty minutes in vinegar mixture and then rub it clean with steel wool. For larger items, such as an area on a bicycle or car, apply a rag or sponge soaked in the vinegar mixture to the area for twenty minutes before rubbing it with the stainless steel sponge.
Clothing
Rust formed in water pipes can leave rust stains on clothing. Brushing up against a rusty car or other surface may also leave unsightly rust stains. According to Mrs. Clean, vinegar and lemon juice is an effective way to remove rust stains from clothing. Spread the article of clothing out over paper towels and apply equal amounts of lemon juice and white vinegar to the stain. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes and then blot it dry with paper towels and set it out in the sun to dry. Afterward, wash the article normally.
Prevention
Rust corrosion in steel objects can be prevented by galvanizing the steel. This involves coating the steel in zinc which delays rust formation. Painting or waxing a metal area also greatly delays the rusting process. When washing any metal surface, quickly dry it. This is so important because rust is formed when excess humidity is present.
