Honda offered all trim levels of the 2000 Civic with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and a 5-speed manual transmission or an optional automatic transmission. The power steering pump is on the driver side of the engine at the very top; the drive belt, which the crankshaft drives, powers the power steering pump. To remove the power steering pulley, you must first remove the power steering belt from the pulley.
Instructions
Removal
- 1
Lift the vehicle hood and support it with the hood prop rod. Allow the engine to cool to prevent accidental burns during this procedure.
2Loosen the power steering mounting bolts with the socket and ratchet. If the power steering pump is equipped with a wing nut adjuster, loosen the wing nut until the belt is loose enough to remove. If there is not an adjuster wing nut, pry the pump toward the rear of the vehicle until the belt is loose enough to remove. Remove the power steering belt from the power steering pulley.
3Install the universal pulley holder tool onto the power steering pulley. Grasp the holding tool handle firmly and remove the power steering pulley nut with the socket and ratchet. Remove the power steering pulley from the power steering pump.
Installation
- 4
Install the new power steering pulley onto the power steering pump shaft and install the pulley nut. Install the universal pulley holding tool onto the new pulley and grasp the handle firmly. Tighten the pulley nut to 47 foot-pounds with the torque wrench.
5Set the power steering belt onto the power steering pulley. Make sure the power steering belt is still on the grooves of the crankshaft pulley and pull the power steering pump until the belt is tight. Hand-tighten the adjuster wing nut, if equipped, until it is tight enough to maintain tension on the belt. If the pump is not equipped with a wing nut, pry back on the pulley until the belt is tight and hand-tighten the mounting bolts.
6Tighten the pump mounting bolts to 17 foot-pounds with the torque wrench. Press down on the power steering belt with your thumb; the belt should give about one-quarter of an inch. If there is too much play in the belt, loosen the mounting bolts and adjuster nut, if equipped, and tension the belt again.
